WOMAN WHO CAME BACK (1945) - DVD

Stars John Loder, Nancy Kelly, Otto Krugar (DRACULA'S DAUGHTER) and Ruth Ford. Republic studios occasionally dabbled in horror through the forties with films like THE CATMAN OF PARIS, and they were always pretty darn good! This is one of the coolest classic/supenatural thrillers from the 1940's I've seen. The first 20 minutes are a knock-out. I can't believe this evaded me for som many years. It's got a horrific witch sequence right off the top and has artistic/Val Lewton production values with the camera thoughtfully resting on images of meaning. A shocking stark scene features men dragging bodies from a river accident and lining them in sheeets along the banks; pretty intense stuff for 1944. Oh, interesting note, perhaps someone out there can verify. The old hag witch at the beginning is the same woman who portrayed the old bed-ridden father in THE OLD DARK HOUSE, 12 years earlier. A great film about a century old family curse, witchcraft, mystery and shadows. Republics take on the Val Lewton (CAT PEOPLE) films.
