An evil supervisor of the mental asylum Bedlam (Karloff) purposely commits a young woman who threatens his character. She is thrust into dirty cells with madmen. Through the fear and terror, she attempts to the occasion and help the inmates and herself. Another quality film of horror and beauty from producer Val Lewton.
ISLE OF THE DEAD (1945) Stars Boris Karloff, Ellen Drew, Marc Cramer, Jason Robards Sr., Katherine Emery and Skeleton Knaggs. A group of travelers are quarantined on an island during warfare. Overseeing the quarantine is hard-edged military man Karloff. Even Karloff begins to crack-up as it seems the undead are rising in the form of vampires. Fear and suspicion turn amongst the isolated group of people. Some tremendously terrifying scenes. My favorite is the scene of a mausoleum....you hear just the dripping of water on stone, scraping and breaking of wood (a coffin from within) and a scream.
