THE BLACK ROOM (1935) Karloff is absolutely terrific in this dual role feature. He plays the good brother, the bad brother and the bad brother playing the good brother...huh? Well, that's right. A sealed room with a pit and high gothics are what THE BLACK ROOM is all about.
THE MAN THEY COULD NOT HANG (1939) Boris in the first of his Columbia mad doctor roles...and probably the best. Great tale of doctor turned bad because of unfortunate circumstances. Karloff is great as he traps a group of people in his booby-trapped mansion and proceeds to kill 'em off one by one.
BEFORE I HANG (1940) Stars Boris Karloff, Evelyn Keyes and Edward Van Sloan. Karloff is a scientist experimenting with a "fountain of youth" drug. He injects himself and watches the years drop away. His friends won't go along with being guinea pigs too, and the drug takes its toll on Karloff. He progresses into a maniac. Edward Van Sloan (FRANKENSTEIN and DRACULA) appears as a prison doctor who works with Boris....until.....
THE BOOGIE MAN WILL GET YOU (1942) Stars Boris Karloff, Peter Lorre, Max Rosenbloom, Larry Parks, Jeff Donnell and Maude Euburne. Made to be in the feel of Karloff's popular stage play ARSENIC AND OLD LACE. A household full of eccentrics includes inventor/doctor Karloff. Karloff has invented a machine to create a race of "supermen." But all the machine appears to do is kill the subject! Local jack-of-all-trades (Peter Lorre) wants to invest in Karloff's device. Lorre is just as wacky as the rest of the household. A young woman searching for antiques, and her fiancee find there way to the backwoods household and stumble upon the craziness. A little too nutty, but Karloff and Lorre are simply great.
