Rondo Remembers: Dracula Is Scary

Even from my earliest memories I thought monsters were different and cool. The Frankenstein Monster could be frightening if I had encountered him alone in a dark alley. The Wolf Man was ferocious and I wouldn't want to hang out with Larry Talbot for a movie night in the cycle of the full moon. I wouldn't want to tell The Mummy I was going to steal his girlfriend. A swim contest across the pool I would surely lose against The Creature. But, they were only scary in my imagination. Ah, but Dracula. Dracula.

Count Dracula was a different story. That guy scared eight-year-old me to the core. Kinda still does. He just seemed to emulate evil. That grimacing smile that Bela Lugosi would display revealed the bad intentions, a selfish horror. He wore black. He was bad business.

I thought of him as I pulled the covers up over my neck at night. That Aurora model kit on top of my dresser was leaning ever so slightly toward me in my bed. Those gnarled tree branches and hanging bats on the model supported my fears in the count.

One evening when I was very young even Bob Denver as Gilligan in GILLIGAN'S ISLAND scared me. Why? Because there was a "dream episode" where Gilligan become a Dracula-like vampire. At about the same age I saw a trailer preview on TV for KISS OF THE VAMPIRE, a Hammer film. The bats came crashing through a stained glass window that I associated with church. I knew Dracula and his hordes had to be behind it. Shattering hope and goodness. Dracula was up to no good, I knew it!

In my mind's eye he was walking down stairs with a candelabra, greeting me with a false smile and grin. He was not to be trusted. There was a gleam in his eyes that told the story. Whether it was Bela Lugosi, Christopher Lee, or Lon Chaney, Jr. choking the life out of Robert Paige (in SON OF DRACULA), I didn't want to be in the same room with this supernatural bat-man.

When I looked out of the window during the night while my family visited my aunt and uncle in Michigan, I thought I saw a cloaked dark figure walking the street. That was thanks to thoughts put into my head by a kid that lived close to my aunt. He had told me of vampire murders all around my aunt's neighborhood. Young kids were dead or disappearing.

Dracula's the monster that is really scary to me.

Re-Stocked! Great Gruesome Blu-Ray Titles For Your Library

Grab the physical media titles you want on Blu-Ray, so you can watch anytime without fear of it being altered or unavailable:

FRANKENSTEIN JR. AND THE IMPOSSIBLES (Complete Series) - Blu-Ray

Frankenstein Jr. and the Impossibles is one half-hour packed with the adventures of two of the most unusual animation creations of the legendary Hanna-Barbera studio. Buzz Conroy is a heroic boy-genius who builds the powerful robot Frankenstein Jr. When the Ghastly Genie, the Junk Man and other evildoers get up to their old tricks, “Frankie” and his young creator crank into action. The crime fighting coalition continues with the Impossibles, a group of superheroes disguised as a beatnik rock group. At the direction of “Big D,” Multi Man, Coil Man and Fluid Man make hot-rockin’ musical justice thwarting thieves and corralling crooks with their transformative powers. All-family classic cartoon, 2-Disc, 18-Episode Collection. Plus, special feature: THE ADVENTURES OF FRANKENSTEIN JR. AND THE IMPOSSIBLES.

FRANKENSTEIN MUST BE DESTROYED (1969) - Blu-Ray

I remember seeing the ads for this on TV when it was in its original theatrical run...just the trailer preview scared me! Lightning flashing, graveyards and ghouls resurrected by Frankenstein. Cushing is back in the fifth film of the Hammer Frankenstein series. Brain transplants and grave robbing abound.

FRANKENSTEIN CREATED WOMAN (1967) - Blu-Ray

Stars Peter Cushing. work! No rest for the weary...Peter Cushing as the Baron implants the soul of a murderer into the body of a beautiful woman. Packed with extras including a World of Hammer TV show, trailers, TV spot, documentary and more!

YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN (1974) - Blu-Ray

Stars Gene Wilder, Peter Boyle, Marty Feldman, Cloris Leachman and Teri Garr. One of the best classic horror satires of all time. Beautiful black and white photography mimics the classic Universals in sets and feel. Wilder plays Dr. "Franhhk-en-steen," not Frankenstein, mind you (he's embarrassed by his family name). Feldman steals the show as the hunchbacked "Eye-gore" (his hump switches from side to side). Just hysterical. A Mel Brooks production. Bonus features on this special edition include trailers, out-takes/bloopers, Mel Brooks commentary, deleted scenes, interviews and TV commercials.

ON THE BEACH (1959) - Blu-Ray

Stars Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, Fred Astaire and Anthony Perkins. It's post nuclear war and a crew aboard a submarine reach Australia were blasts and radiation haven't reached. But, there's a massive radiation cloud coming their way and no hope of escape. How do the small group of people react? Amazing and powerful.

Rondo Remembers: Theater Generations

Some of my earliest memories of watching movies and learning about them still resonate in the back of my skull. It is a fascination with the moving picture and spooky movies.

My maternal grandfather worked at Grove City College managing the recreation building there. Across the campus road was the college library. He would check out big hardback books from there and treat me to them when I visited. I was maybe four or five at the time. He would show me photos in those books of his favorite movies and actors. Laurel and Hardy, Harold Lloyd, and Lon Chaney!

He told me he had worked at the local theater, along with his older brother (nicknamed "Jitters"). When they were still pre-teen they would post window cards of current movies for the Guthrie Theater and change out posters and lobby cards. Many years later I asked him if he ever saved those posters from the silent era that he had posted. He said he hadn't. He did just what the theater manager told him to do. After they were taken down, take them out back of the theater and throw them in the ditch! Ouch.

Since I liked the scary movies, I asked my grandfather what movie scared him back in those days when he was a kid. I expected THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI, or something like that. No, it was WINGS (1927), a war picture. Why? He said he walked into the theater after it had already started and heard the roar of planes! It was the first "sound" movie he had ever experienced. It made him jump. It was one of the first experimental sound films with no audible dialogue, just the sound effects. New to audiences back then.

His brother, my great uncle, went onto be a lifelong theater projectionist in Florida.

My dad, Tom Adams, also worked in the theaters and had a similar experience with movie posters. Just after high school he worked at a local theater janitor as a second job at night. He would sweep popcorn, clean the stuck candy on the floors, and empty the trash. In an early apartment he had a ceiling water leak so he rescued thrown away posters at the theater. He would attach them to his water stained ceiling with the plain backs facing down. Problem fixed, ceiling nice and white again. Posters, considered garbage, went to good use. Oh, my.

When I was about nineteen years old I was working at a local radio station. Making very little money as a DJ. I applied for a nighttime job at the local theater chain. I was trained as a projectionist dealing with very dangerous carbon arc projectors. My training was at one of the theaters and at a co-owned drive-in theater in Bellefonte, PA (next town over from State College, PA). I loved it, but loved radio more. I was offered a full-time job at the local Top 40 radio station and my theater career ended after just about a month. But, I too, like my grandfather and father had my brush with working in the theater business.

Movies have been in the blood for me. In particular horror, mystery, and science fiction. It all still resonates in my soul.
