Rondo Remembers: First Frankenstein!

Where did you first see the image of the Frankenstein Monster? Wow, I have to wind back through the years and think about how I became fascinated with this monster that became a pop culture icon.
I can piece together snatches of profound "Frankenstein Monster" encounters and somewhat time stamp them...it's difficult though. It seems as though I always knew what the Frankenstein Monster looked like. I may refer to him as just "Frankenstein" through this essay. After all, that's what pop culture adapted. Even as far back as the BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN (1935) and SON OF FRANKENSTEIN (1939) they make reference to the villagers calling the monster just after his maker's name.
Here are the notable early brushes with the monster. I distinctly remember seeing the Aurora model kit (as I've mentioned in past essays) on a table during a street fair in Grove City, Pennsylvania. This is where many of the downtown stores on Broadstreet put sale items out on the sidewalks. On one table at a drugstore that also sold a few model kits, there it was. The Frankenstein Aurora model kit. The box had the green visage of Frankenstein. I would, decades later, find that this box cover was wonderfully painted for Aurora by artist James Bama. I, for some reason, was totally mesmerized by it. I pleaded with my parents to buy it for me. No luck at the time. However, it would turn out being a gift (hidden under my parent's bed) that would be given a few weeks later. I had done some chore for my parents and Mom said "Go look under our bed and you can have what's there." Wowza!
That model kit experience was probably in 1964 or 1965. I'm not really sure. My dad and I built it together in the basement of our house on Pine Street. Of course, the gluing and assembly was almost entirely done by my dad as I helped find the different parts. He let me assist a bit in the painting of the monster.
Then, there's the Jerry Lewis comic book. There was an issue of the DC Jerry Lewis comic book that featured the monsters. On the cover there was a werewolf, Dracula, and my eyes zoomed right in on the green Frankenstein. I encountered this comic book at the barber shop when I was five or six. Again, the whole barber shop story has been detailed in a former essay. So this was an early meeting of me and Frankenstein, but it still was in that 1964-1965 era.
Now, it wasn't Frankenstein exactly....but there is another early encounter that I can nail down. I was there, cross-legged on the floor watching the MILTON THE MONSTER television cartoon show. This was new, which puts it at 1965. I would have been five or six. Same time period as the Aurora model exposure. But, somehow, someway I already knew what the culture's Frankenstein Monster was suppose to look like.
Then there were some exciting Frankenstein moments thanks to Warner Brothers cartoons. Bugs Bunny encountered a robotic Frankenstein Monster. Another Warner cartoon features Frankenstein and other literary monsters coming to life from the pages of books. These would have been on broadcast TV around the same early 1960s period.
I discovered, only a few years ago, a children's book of stories and fables. It's a big hardback book. On the inside was an inscription by my mom. It read something like, "For Ronnie, 1964." There on the inside front cover I had drawn an image (almost the full page) of Frankenstein in crayon. He had a green face, red scars, neck bolts, a black suit, and big boots. That would have put me at about four years old. I already knew all the signature trademarks of the iconic monster. The actual drawing appears above.
Putting on my detective hat...both the Aurora model box, and the Jerry Lewis comic book (from 1964) featured the monster without the red scars. So how could I have known to draw the red scars in the crayon depiction. My only thoughts were, maybe when I was building the model kit with my dad, he said those scars have to be red...? Even though the box art didn't show red scars, on the model itself, there they were. But the instructions didn't say that the scars were to be red.
So, alas, I'm not really sure where I first became enamored with the Frankenstein Monster. One of the mysteries of childhood. But, those were my early brushes with Frankenstein that have stomped along with me through the years.

September 2025

Ron,
Loved the Frankenstein memory story! It got me thinking about when I first discovered the big fella. I used to watch a Friday night spook show called Dimension 13. It aired at 10:30 on Channel 13 out of Rockford, Illinois. I vividly remember watching - and being scared by - Bride of Frankenstein. When the monster first appeared in the water, I was frozen. And then, when his hand reached up and the lady grabbed it - thinking it was her husband - that sent me over the moon. I’m thinking I was about 5 or 6, although I’m not sure if my mom would’ve allowed me to stay up that late at that age. I know I was very young, though, and didn’t fully understand what was happening.
Sometime in the early 70s my brother and I saw the ad in the back of a comic book (while at the barber) for a “life size Frankenstein”! Again, this was probably 1970 or ‘71, and I was either 5 or 6. We ended up buying it and waited the usual 4 to 6 weeks for delivery. It was a thin (cheap) plastic sheet with Frankenstein on it, one hand outstretched. We ended up hanging ours on the inside of our bedroom door. Oh, and we spent a few extra pesos for the “glowing eyes”. They turned out to be small, round stickers you’d put on Frankenstein’s eyes, about where the pupil would be. They did glow in the dark, so that was kinda cool.

New! Vintage Horror Fantasy Fiction in THE MOON POOL
South seas horror and a rescue adventure from the pen of A. Merritt back in 1919:
THE MOON POOL (A. Merritt) - Softcover Book
By Abraham Merritt. Originally published in 1919. A novel involving a lost world adventure, inspired by the monumental ruins of Nan Madol in the South Pacific, which also inspired Lovecraft’s lost city of Ryloth. Merritt’s description of the South Pacific is evocative. Merritt accurately describes the vast numbers of unusual people who populated the tramp steamers of the day. The narrator, assembles a band of adventurers as he seeks to rescue his friend Throckmartin from the Dweller in the Moon Pool. Cosmic horror and adventure with shades of H.P. Lovecraft.
