Rondo Remembers - Mummy's Day

I plan to watch Boris Karloff's THE MUMMY (1932) and THE MUMMY'S HAND (1940) this weekend in honor of Mother's Day.
Hopefully, your mother was as plugged in as mine was growing up. She was okay with my love of monster movies and comic books. She supported my interest and imagination. I remember her for that. She was relentless in surprising me with the cool stuff I liked.
A birthday didn't go by that she didn't provide some monster item that had my eyes filled with glee. Everything from Aurora monster model kits to back issues of FAMOUS MONSTERS magazine...even into my adult years with video tapes. She baked many a birthday cake that sported a plastic monster or dinosaur hiding amongst the candles on top. In fact, one comedic looking Tyrannosaur hybrid went from my birthday cake to the dashboard of my vehicle. It's there to this day. It's been on every dashboard for the past 43 years! An arm has melted off from the sun, but he's still there, affectionately named "Gorgo."
Every Easter there would be a basket populated by traditional colored eggs, a chocolate bunny...but, they had to share space in the plastic grass with rubber Frankensteins, Incredible Hulk comic books, and pencil topper monsters.
Christmases were also incredible. Under the tree (that was buried in silver tinsel) were colorful wrapped packages. Many were heavy ones. One year Creepy Crawlers, another year...the Fright Factory. A Strange Change machine (remember those?). One year a dinosaur playset complete with dinos, cavemen, rock structures, and palm trees. I still have some of those gifts. I've talked about before in these essays, one Christmas she wrapped a box inside a box, inside a box (etc.). At the end of that opening, in a tiny box was a note that simply said "You now have a subscription to FAMOUS MONSTERS magazine." Wow.
When I was a bit older Mom (I'm sure with an assist from Dad) placed a very heavy box under the Christmas tree. I was thirteen and I unwrapped my very own stereo! Along with the stereo was the Beatles 1962-1966 (The Red Album), David Bowie's Space Oddity, and the vinyl record album of Straight Up by Badfinger. Mom knew it was monsters and music for this guy.
Besides holidays and gifts, I got a reprieve on a school night. It was a strict rule that on school nights my sister and I had to be in bed by 10PM. However, when Rod Serling's NIGHT GALLERY aired here at 10PM on Wednesdays I was taken by total surprise that Mom let me stay up to watch it. It ran till 11PM on Wednesday nights and she watched it with me.
In later years, when my wife and I had our first house, my parent's were visiting. Everyone had gone to bed except my Mom and I. I asked her if she wanted to watch a laser disc I had got in the mail. It was THE STRANGE DOOR (I think paired with THE BLACK CASTLE). She agreed and there we watched an old Boris Karloff movie together. Just my mom and me.
So on this Mother's Day weekend, I'll honor her and make it Mummy's Day Weekend. She would have chuckled and said "Oh, brother!" I'll be watching THE MUMMY and THE MUMMY'S HAND. She's gone now, but I thank you Mom for encouraging me and my crazy imagination through all the years.

An often overlooked science fiction classic from the director of CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON and IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE:

Stars Michael Ray, Adam Williams, Peggy Webber, Johnny Wasbrook, Jackie Coogan and Russell Johnson. A huge, glowing alien brain materializes in a hidden cave near a military base. The children of scientists working on the base discover the creature which telepathically begins to control them. Much to the surprise of their parents, the kids begin working on ways to thwart a rocket launch for the alien. Russell Johnson (the professor from Gilligan's island and a host of 50s sci-fi films) plays against his usual character. He's a mean, rotten drunk in this film!

Rondo Remembers: Summer Days Are Coming Back (above: Kevin Slick, Tom Adams, Ron Adams, summer 1975)

Where have those summer's gone? Days where you actually got bored. Ah, to reclaim those days in some magical time machine that George Pal would build for us. These are the summers I remember....and long for again. Maybe someday, sometime, we can slip back to live again in those days.
Glimpses of summers gone by:
Kicking down the sidewalk, some of them still big slate squares. Uneven from tree roots and rains. Don't step on the cracks...you'll break your mother's back and give your father a heart attack. In my hands the latest issue of TALES TO ASTONISH, the comic book that featured The Incredible Hulk and the Sub-Mariner. I couldn't wait to spend hours studying each panel of that comic...thanks to the genius of Stan Lee and Marie Severin.
Plopping down in the cushioned chair at my maternal grandparents' living room. Opening up that issue of FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND. There was my name in the You Axed For It feature! There was a letter from some other kid who also liked Lon Chaney, Jr. There was Lon Chaney Sr. and his painful Phantom of the Opera make-up. I looked up at the big oval braided rug in my grandparents' living room at the fireplace on the other side of the room. Life couldn't be better.
It was a quiet Saturday morning and I was out back of my grandparents' Adams house on Jackson Street. There was a little stone stairwell out back that lead into my grandpa's workshop in the basement. There I sat on the side of that stairwell to read a CREEPY magazine. A quiet morning, the tree leaves not even moving. The sun hadn't cooked the air yet. Just me and a few ants crawling by. A beautiful morning.
Running through the golden high grassy fields to a clubhouse built from scrap wood by neighborhood friends and me. Inside some shade from the heat and shared comic books. Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandoes, Rawhide Kid, Fantastic Four, Captain America, Blackhawk, Magnus - Robot Fighter. Grasshoppers spit bubbles of tobacco on the tall weeds around our fort. It was summer, we were kids...rent, mortgages...we knew them not.
Out at our new house, it was the junior high years. I would ride my bike a couple miles to hang out at Kevin Slick's farm. Sharing our latest "finds" of FAMOUS MONSTERS magazines and 45 records from The Hollies, The Raspberries, Paul & Linda McCartney. Record albums by John Denver, Paul Simon, The Beatles and The Monkees. Autograph cards we had both gotten from the editor of FAMOUS MONSTERS himself - Forrest J Ackerman! Playing guitars in his farm's silo, Kevin going on to be a professional musician in the years that followed.
At my house, it was the pool table in the basement, my dad's 1950s rock and roll albums, and the ever present thread...comic books and monster magazines. Those were the days of long, never ending summer days. If only they hadn't ended. If only time hadn't shifted into a higher gear. Somewhere in my head, I'm still there and hope to be back there again, somehow.
