A cosmic force from space seems to have something to do with it. Nine months later many of the women in that town have children. All the kids are blonde-haired and appear to be able to read minds. And, oh yeah, their eyes glow and they have some type of unified, evil intent upon mankind. A very different and effective tale of alien invasion.
