A painter meets a young woman (Jennifer Jones) and spends time with her, painting a portrait. Only to find that the woman has been dead...a long time. His obession and stong feeling for this mysterious woman grow and he finds her appearances fleeting and finds himself chasing a whisper of a soul. A dramatic meeting happen during a tremendous storm on a rocky island with a lighthouse. The portrait and lighthouse seems drift into eerie color from the rich black and white of the film.
